HTML was originally conceived of for the sharing of musty research documents, and had little functionality, beyond perhaps clickable links ,and the rendering of simple text, and some simple layout suggestions one might find in a paper document.

The diverse uses and functions developers came up with for web-pages gave rise to extentions like Netscape's plugin/ mechanisim, and later sun's JAVA/ mechanisim to augment the generic nature of HTML with custom extensions.

The <object> tag replaces both the <embed> and <applet> tags with a generic mechanisim for conveying content and/or functionality that augments or goes beyond that accounted for in the HTML spec.
